Why everyone is going to Gujarat Chaudhrys while preparing for no confidence motion against Imran Khan
Parties in Pakistan are trying to oust the current government. They are also considering a no confidence motion.
The main opposition parties recently held consultations to create a-conducive environment for this and after that it was decided to talk to the ruling coalition parties as well.
After this the house of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi was cordoned off by the leaders of the opposition parties. Almost 14 years later PML N President Shahbaz Sharif also arrived to meet the Chaudhry brothers.
On his way back Shahbaz Sharif was also invited to dinner. Earlier the PML N had been strictly pursuing a policy of meeting & not talking to the Chaudhrys of Gujarat.
Regarding the aims and objectives of these meetings news is circulating in the local media that the opposition leaders want the support of the Chaudhry brothers for the success of the no-confidence motion against the government.
That is, if the Chaudhry brothers had sided with them they could have succeeded in their plan to send the present government home,not only in Punjab but also in the Center.
It may be recalled that Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi is the current Speaker of the Punjab Assembly while former Deputy Prime Minister and former Chief Minister of Punjab. His partythe Pakistan Muslim League Q formed under former military dictator Pervez Musharraf, was in power from 2002 to 2007.
Since then it has been said that the politics of the Chaudhrys is over.
Recently, Prime Minister Imran Khan himself was present at the residence of Chaudhry brothers. He had gone to treat PML Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.
However Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry told a local private TV channel that politics was also discussed. The Chaudhry brothers told the Prime Minister that they were are and will remain their allies.
However, the question is what power do the Chaudhrys of Gujarat have for which the leaders of both the opposition & the government and the incumbent Prime Minister himself had to come to them?
What do the Chaudhrys have?
Journalist & analyst Mazhar Abbas says this is due to numerical strength of his party the Q League as well as the political influence of the Chaudhrys of Gujarat in Punjab the country largest and most important province in electoral politics.
He has demonstrated this on several occasions in the past but Mazhar Abbas illustrates this with a recent example.
Despite winning a majority in Punjab in the 2018 elections, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf PTI could not form a government without their support. The PML Q had only ten seats and all these PTIs came in handy against the PMLN.
Speaking to LNN Mazhar Abbas also pointed out that in the election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the Punjab Assembly in 2018, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi himself and his supporting candidate made all the members of PTI and PML Q. He got more votes than the number.
This meant that many members of the opposition parties, especially the PML-N, had voted for him. In other words, apart from party affiliations, Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi's personal influence was such that many members of their party voted for him in spite of their displeasure with him.
